Contingency Plans for Otley Road Closure

Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) is assuring people in and around Otley that emergency vehicles will still be able to get to them despite the closure of one of the main roads into the town. They're also appealing to people only to call 999 when it is necessary.

The A6038 Bradford Road / Otley Road between Otley and Menston will close for essential repairs on 22 July 2007. It's expected to be closed for up to 20 weeks, but it's hoped that the work will finish sooner.

During this time YAS will be basing a Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV) in Otley. It will be there during the busiest times - between 8am and 6pm - and will be able to ensure a respond response to any 999 calls. Emergency vehicles coming into Otley from Menston will follow the diversions that will be in place for all motorists.

Andrew Simpson, Locality Manager for YAS, said: "As an organisation committed to patient care, we are endeavouring to maintain our emergency cover for the residents in and around Otley. One way that the people in Otley can help us maintain our standard of care is to ensure that they only call an ambulance when completely necessary.

"We do not want to deter people from calling 999 if it is a genuine emergency, but would like to encourage appropriate use of the Service and remind people that there are a range of other options, which could be more suitable for their needs."

Leader of Otley Town Council, Councillor Jim Spencer, said: "We've had a lot of co-operation from Yorkshire Ambulance Service. Providing the Rapid Response Vehicle in the town is a great assurance to the people of Otley."

4. The Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) is now in its second year of operation. It was formed on 1 July 2006 when the three Yorkshire-based services merged. It operates 60 Ambulance Stations throughout the county, with the main headquarters in Wakefield. YAS serves a population of 5.4 million people and covers varying terrain from coastal areas, large urban areas and inner cities to dales and rural expanses covering an area of 6,000 square miles.
