Yorkshire Ambulance Service provide support after
London explosion

Yorkshire Ambulance Service’s (YAS) Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team was requested to assist in the search following Wednesday’s explosion in South Harrow, London.

YAS’s USAR team received the call at 7am on Thursday 8 May 2008 and arrived in London later that morning to provide support to London Ambulance Service, and London Fire and Rescue Service’s own USAR team.

YAS’s USAR team was stood down from the incident earlier today with the crew and vehicles returning to Yorkshire this afternoon.

YAS was the first ambulance trust in the country, and is now only one of three to have a USAR service. YAS’s USAR team was the first in Europe.  The USAR team consists of specially-trained and equipped emergency medical technicians and paramedics who can provide a specialised response in precarious rescue operations and can include places where access is extremely difficult.

This is the second time in two weeks YAS’s USAR team has been mobilised. The previous incident was the explosion at a disused pub in Leeds.
