Ambulance and Police Join Forces in Pickering

06 July 2009

Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) NHS Trust is transforming the way it responds to emergencies by placing emergency ambulances at strategically positioned standby points in busy areas so that they can get to patients more quickly.

The new standby point, which went live on Monday 6 July 2009 at Pickering Police Station, is one of a network across Yorkshire where ambulance vehicles can wait until they are needed to enable us to provide an improved response to residents living in and around the area.

Mike Wright, YAS Locality Manager said: “Our priority is to respond to 999 calls as quickly as possible and by having strategically placed standby locations, where historically there has been a high level of demand, we are reaching patients quicker than ever before.”

Inspector Tim Hutchinson, Head of Ryedale Police Safer Neighbourhood team added: “All the emergency services work together to give the best possible service we can. Sharing our police station with YAS makes perfect sense and is a positive step for the public, who may need our help.”

The arrangement means that YAS staff can share the kitchen, toilet and meal room facilities at the police station, while they wait for an emergency call. Tim added: “By working closely together, we will build up a stronger 999 team. That sort of teamwork counts when the chips are down and other people are relying on you.”

People should still dial 999 for an ambulance rather than contacting the police station or ringing the police.
