West Yorkshire Emergency Services    Join Forces for Summer Gala

09 June 2010

This year’s summer gala promises to be even more spectacular than ever before, with all three emergency services taking part, supported by a number of life-saving charities.

The gala, held at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service headquarters in Bradford Road, Birkenshaw, will take place from midday on Saturday 10 July 2010.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will have a number of fire engines and specialist equipment and staff at the event, including aerial appliances, turntable ladders, chemical protection units, command and control units, the Urban Search and Rescue team and their equipment, specialist rope rescue teams, water rescue teams and decontamination specialists.

The West Yorkshire Police helicopter will be at the event, as well as a police dog display, firearms unit, underwater search unit, mobile police van, motorcycles and off-road bikes, a specialist riot van, mounted police, wildlife and crime prevention, the road policing partnership, a motorway Range Rover display and Neighbourhood Policing Team bus.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service will have a range of ambulances at the event, including a cycle response unit. The Hazardous Area Response Team, who are trained to deliver clinical care at hazardous incidents, will be on site with the ‘working at heights’ team and a suite of vehicles, including decontamination units. Specialist ambulance staff will hold a mini clinic where members of the public can have their blood pressure and heart rate checked. Children can visit the education ambulance to learn about basic first aid tips and how and when to call 999.

A number of other life-saving organisations will have their services and resources on display at the gala, including Yorkshire Air Ambulance, British Red Cross, National Blood Donor Services, Royal National Lifeboat Institute, Holme Valley Mountain Rescue, motorway agencies and local authority departments.

The popular Army assault course will be back again this year, as well as the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Band, Bradford Bulls, farmers’ market, dance troupes, majorettes and more than 80 stalls.

Gala committee chairman Brian Hughes said: “Recent building work at fire service headquarters means we are able to double the size of the event this year and make it a true emergency services gala, with all three 999 services taking an active role. The emphasis will be on providing information while having lots of fun.”

Brian said there is still space available for anyone wishing to participate, in particular any charities, sports clubs, community groups and commercial organisations. Charities and volunteer organisations can attend free of charge.

The entrance fee for the gala is just £1 for adults and children under 12 years can enter free of charge.
