Ambulance Service Showcases Apprentice Talent during National Apprenticeship Week

13 March 2015

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust (YAS) has released short films of its apprentices in action to mark National Apprenticeship Week.

The films feature a handful of its current 70 apprentices who describe their roles and future ambitions as a celebration of the success of the YAS Apprenticeship Scheme.

Launched by YAS in 2009, the scheme provides individuals with full basic training, on-the-job mentorship, job-specific skills and a range of qualifications within an Apprenticeship Framework, which is delivered in partnership with YH Training Services Ltd.

So far, around 200 apprentices have completed the apprentice programme, 80% of whom have gone on to secure employment with the Trust in a range of departments including A&E Operations, the non-emergency Patient Transport Service, Estates and Patient Relations.

Rod Barnes, Interim Chief Executive at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, commented: “Our apprenticeships are an ideal first step towards employment within the ambulance service and many of our apprentices have now moved into permanent roles and have a very bright future ahead of them.

“Establishing apprenticeships within our organisation has really energised the workforce and we have been rewarded with some great staff who otherwise may not have come to work with us. We are committed to the training and development of our workforce through our Apprenticeship Scheme and see this as a vital step in ensuring a future generation of ambulance staff.”

As part of its support for apprentices, the Trust has also committed to continue to grow and develop its Apprenticeship Scheme through the National Apprenticeship Week Pledge-o-meter and Skills for Health and NHS Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber Development Scheme. Over the next year the Trust is looking to recruit a further 100 apprentices.
