Children’s Critical Care Transport Service Highlighted at Ambulance Trust Board Meeting

Yorkshire’s specialist round-the-clock Embrace transport service for critically-ill infants and children was highlighted at the Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) NHS Trust Board Meeting held in public this week.

The presentation by Dr Stephen Hancock, Consultant Paediatric Lead for Embrace at Sheffield Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, gave attendees an insight into the vital work of the team of doctors, specialist nurses, advanced nurse practitioners and YAS drivers who help around 2,000 patients a year when they need care at hospitals in the region and further afield.

Chaired by Ms Della M Cannings QPM, the meeting was, on this occasion held at The Courtyard Conference Centre in Goole.  The bi-monthly meetings regularly move around the region so that residents have the opportunity to come and see the Board working, meet the Board members and ask any questions they may have.

The agenda also included a patient story and updates on the Trust’s performance, challenges and key developments.

The Trust Board is in place to ensure that the Trust develops and delivers the highest standards of patient care and went on to discuss current pressures on the emergency ambulance service, highlighting recent improvements in response times. They also noted concerns around the on-going challenges at some hospital emergency departments with handover of patients and confirmed that executive-level discussions were continuing to try and improve the situation.

The NHS 111 urgent care service was praised for performing well and acknowledged for helping over two million patients since its launch in March 2013.

In addition, the Trust Board noted the contract position for its services for the new financial year and the draft opening budgets for 2015/16.

The Trust Board also recognised the positive progress made by Interim Chief Executive Rod Barnes since November 2014 and congratulated Ian Braithwaite, Public Member (East) of the YAS Forum for his appointment by Members as the Lead Forum Member. Ian will work closely with Chairman Della M Cannings QPM to shape the agenda for developments of the YAS Forum and how it can contribute to the Trust’s future strategy.

The next Trust Board Meeting to be held in public will take place on Tuesday 26 May 2015 at The Bradford Hotel, Hall Ings, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD1 5SH.
