Yorkshire Ambulance Service Staff and Volunteers Celebrate Award Success

23 December 2015

Congratulations to staff and volunteers at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust (YAS) who were recognised at this year’s Yorkshire Evening Post Best of Health Awards on Monday 7 December 2015.

Many of Yorkshire’s heroic health workers were nominated for the annual awards and the results were announced at a ceremony at the Queen’s Hotel in Leeds, presented by BBC Look North’s Clare Frisby.

The following YAS staff and volunteers were honoured at the event:

Emergency Response Worker of the Year

  • Winner - Steve Hudson, Castleford-based Assistant Practitioner and Normanton Community First Responder (CFR), for his work as the West District CFR Manager for St John Ambulance.
  • Highly Commended - Paramedic Gareth Ross for his efforts in Sierra Leone with people affected by Ebola.
  • Shortlisted - Sean Ridley for his work as co-ordinator of the Bradford North CFR Scheme, and Graham Pace for his work as co-ordinator of the CFR Scheme in Rothwell, Leeds, and Leader of the St John Ambulance Wakefield Volunteer Unit.

Unsung Hero Award

  • Winner - Malton/Norton CFR Jon Ainley for his work as a Support Co-ordinator with the Encephalitis Society.

Team of the Year

  • Shortlisted - Our Restart a Heart Team, which won the accolade in 2014, was recognised for providing CPR training to 20,000 youngsters at 97 secondary schools on Restart a Heart Day in October 2015.

Rod Barnes, Chief Executive of YAS, said: I would like to pay tribute to the incredible work which goes on every minute of every day in the health sector, but particularly to our staff and volunteers whose inspirational efforts caught the attention of the judges in the YEP Best of Health Awards. These accolades are well-deserved and demonstrate the outstanding efforts of our teams who work exceptionally hard for the benefit of our patients and local communities.

Almost 100 nominations were received for the YEP Best of Health Awards 2015, sponsored by Sovereign Health Care, and the judging panel had the difficult task of shortlisting to an exceptional roster of volunteers and workers in all areas of the health sector who have demonstrated their willingness to go the extra mile for those that they care for.
