Ambulance Staff Take 'First Steps' Towards Supporting Mental Wellbeing

Staff from Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust (YAS) are getting their walking boots on to support their colleagues at North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) with The Blue Light Walk - a sponsored coast-to-coast walk to raise money for the MIND Blue Light Programme.

The fundraising initiative is the concept of four ambulance staff at NWAS who wanted to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health and mental health support within the emergency services.

The team approached their counterparts at YAS to host the first day of the event - known as 'The First Steps' - as it runs through Yorkshire.

'The First Steps' will take place on Sunday 25 September 2016 and will start at the new Scarborough RNLI Station before crossing the countryside and finishing at Pickering Recreation Club, covering a distance of 22.5 miles.

Mark Wright, Paramedic at YAS said: "It is an honour for YAS to host the first day of this walk. Taking care of your mental health is very important for everyone but research from MIND has shown that even though emergency services personnel are more likely to experience a mental health problem than the general workforce, they're less likely to take time off work as a result."

Members of the public are invited to join staff and supporters from YAS and NWAS for the walk on Sunday 25 September 2016 and can sign-up by visiting www.bluelightwalk.com

For those who would like to support the event but who are unable to take part in 'The First Steps' donations can be made through the Blue Light Walk website. Alternatively, donations can be made through a mobile phone by texting MBLP99 followed by the donation amount (for example, adding 5 for a five pound donation) to 70070.
