Equality and Diversity
Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) is committed to ensuring that there is equality of opportunity for all our staff, patients, and visitors.
By achieving this patients will receive improved care and a better experience from consistently getting the right response, first time, in time.
We provide high quality care and need to continue to match our services to the changes in how and where healthcare is provided and the increasing demands of the public. At the same time we must develop our workforce to ensure that it reflects the needs of communities which it serves. We want to ensure we have a better knowledge and understanding of those communities, and are therefore better able to meet the needs of our service users.
We believe that everyone has the right to be treated fairly regardless of their race, colour, sex, religion/belief, nationality, ethnic origin, disability, marital status, gender identity, sexual orientation, social background and age.
Tackling discrimination and harassment, promoting equality of opportunity and maintaining good community relations are central to all we do across the organisation. We have therefore adopted a mainstream approach in the way we work and how we develop our staff.
We recognise that equality and diversity is part of our core business with regard to:
- achieving corporate objectives
- tackling health inequalities and meeting local priorities
- securing a diverse workforce
- providing culturally competent services
- having patient and public involvement
- promoting the social inclusion agenda.
Our vision is to lead in promoting diversity and we are committed to employing a skilled workforce in order to do so. We intend to embed equality, diversity and human rights into our day-to-day practice, policies and procedures so that it becomes integral for all. By working in partnership with local communities and the local authorities we will review and update the schemes to ensure they meet the changing needs of the population we serve.
On the Equality and Diversity section of this website you will find our Equality Schemes. Each of them plays an important role in achieving our commitment to equality, diversity and human rights. YAS also aims to ensure that it employs and develops a healthcare workforce that is diverse, non discriminatory and appropriate to deliver modern healthcare.
We are always keen to hear your views on our equality and diversity schemes. Your comments and suggestions will help up to prioritise our equality work, and help us make progress towards achieving our objectives. We need to know how you think we are doing and the areas where you think we need to make improvements.
