Free First Aid Awareness Training

For the past four years Yorkshire Ambulance Service has provided over 100 free first aid awareness training sessions to Trust members and various community groups across the region. These events have all been well-attended and have been a great success.

Thank you to everyone who supported and attended these events!

Last year the Trust changed its approached to delivering the free first aid awareness training courses. Members of the public were invited to nominate a group/society/organisation who would benefit from receiving our free first aid awareness training.

A member our of Community and Commercial Education Team will travel to your chosen venue and the course lasts two and a half hours. Each of the attendees will receive a certificate of attendance.

The course content includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and also shows how to treat the most common emergencies such as heart attack or stroke.

For further information or if you would like a member of the Community and Commercial Education Team to deliver the free first aid training to your group/society/organisation please email membership@yas.nhs.uk

YAS in the Community
Over the last year Don Buxton, Community and Commercial Education Trainer has been out and about across the region delivering free first aid awareness training to schools, community groups and various youth groups.

More recently Don visited Greenhill Primary School, Sheffield, with the education ambulance.

The 76 children showed great interest when looking around the vehicle and learning how the ambulance service helps them, their families and friends.

They were all given a copy of our First Aid Heroes Key Stage 2 book which prompted them to ask further questions.

Will Wood, Foundation Stage Phase Leader at Greenhill Primary School, said: “The visit was absolutely fantastic, exactly what we were hoping to achieve! The ambulance had the desired ‘wow’ factor. Don was patient, polite, friendly and understanding of the four and five-year-olds that he was working with…I look forward to doing it again next year.”

Don also delivered two free first aid awareness sessions to a group of 50 mums with young children and babies, which was organised by a journalist and mother, Sophie Mei Lan Slack, who knows first-hand the importance of learning CPR and basic first aid.

Any community group can benefit from this free first aid awareness training and Don often receives letters of thanks and scenarios where individuals have put their training into practice.

As well as delivering the free first aid awareness session, participants are encouraged to sign up as Foundation Trust Members, which is what the 24 women did when Don went to see them at the Pakistani Muslim Ladies Community Centre in Tinsley.
