New video launched to help public understand when to call 111 or 999
29 January 2026
Yorkshire Ambulance Service has released a new animated video to guide the public in choosing the correct medical helpline in times of need.
The video provides clear explanations on when to call 111 for non-urgent medical advice and when to dial 999 for emergencies, as well as outlining what happens once each number is called.
NHS 111 (phone and online) is designed for people who need urgent medical help, but it is not a serious or life-threatening medical emergency. Calling 111 will connect you to a health advisor who can direct you to the best place to get help. 111 online - 111.nhs.uk - can be used for patients over five and provides quick guidance and access to appropriate care pathways directly via the internet.
In contrast, 999 should be called in when someone is seriously ill or injured or their life is at risk such as severe chest pain, breathing difficulties, unconsciousness or major trauma.
This engaging video breaks down the steps involved in each process, so people know exactly what to expect when they make a call. By sharing this resource, the goal is to empower people to make informed decisions and ensure emergency services are available for those who need them most.
The video is also available with Arabic subtitles.
