Privacy Notice: Long Lies Study
We are doing a research study to understand how people are affected after being unable to get up for a long time after a fall (a "long lie"). Hospital research staff will look at medical records from 200 patients who were taken to hospital by Yorkshire Ambulance Service after a fall. We will review the care and treatment they received in the 90 days after the fall to understand how this affected their health and the care they received.
How will my information be used?
Yorkshire Ambulance Service will share some personal information (for example, your NHS number and date of birth) with the hospital. Hospital staff will check if you are suitable for the study and ask for your consent to take part. If you agree, researchers will review your hospital records and collect information about your care. This will include any hospital admissions, inpatient and outpatient visits and appointments that take place in the next 90 days. This will be shared with Yorkshire Ambulance Service. For patients who cannot consent (for example, if they are very unwell or have died) and proxy consent is not available (e.g. from a family member) we will share this data using the permissions of Section 251 support. Section 251 support is a legal arrangement under the NHS Act 2006. This allows access to identifiable patient data only where getting consent is not feasible and research is in the greater public interest. More information can be found about Section 251 at this website: Confidentiality Advisory Group - Health Research Authority.
Sharing your information
We will only share personal information between the ambulance service and the hospital where you received care. If you’ve chosen to opt out of sharing your data for research (via the NHS National Data Opt-Out), your information will not be shared and you will not be contacted. No data will be shared outside of the UK and data will be held securely on NHS servers with restricted access.
How long will you keep hold of my information?
Your information will be securely stored by Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust for up to five years after the final results of the study are published. Only approved NHS staff, such as Research Paramedics and Research Nurses involved in the research, will have access to your personal information. For more information, please visit the study website.
