New solar panel funding awarded to Yorkshire Ambulance Service

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust (YAS) has been awarded over £1.4 million to install solar panels across several of its sites as part of a national initiative.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero recently announced a package of £100 million from Great British Energy for the NHS to install solar power and battery storage solutions to help drive down energy bills, offering better value for the taxpayer.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service is one of 78 NHS Trusts to be awarded the funding.

The new solar panels will enable the Trust to build resilience into its energy management and estate. The solar and battery storage provided through the funding will also help YAS to decarbonise the estate and its fleet faster than anticipated.

These new solar panel installation projects are expected to deliver savings of around £8.6 million a year across the NHS, with lifetime savings of up to £260 million. Investing in renewable energy generation will deliver reductions in energy costs that can be redirected into frontline care.

The investment enables YAS to continue to deliver one of its four bold ambitions, ‘Our Planet and Pounds’, which focuses on using its financial and physical resources responsibly and sustainably, reducing its environment impact and ensuring the most effective use of resources.

Glen Adams, Director of Fleet and Estates at YAS, said: “We’re delighted that YAS has been awarded funding for the installation of solar panels at several of our sites. This initiative is a significant step forward in the Trust’s commitment to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint. The solar panels will not only help us lower our energy bills and contribute to a greener future, but also enable us to redirect the savings into frontline patient care.”
