Yorkshire Ambulance Service issues firework safety advice ahead of Bonfire Night and Diwali
03 November 2026
Yorkshire Ambulance Service is reminding everyone to take extra care and follow firework safety advice during upcoming Bonfire Night and Diwali celebrations.
Every year, Yorkshire Ambulance Service is called to patients who have been injured by fireworks or bonfire-related incidents. These injuries can range from minor burns to life-threatening conditions. The service is urging the public to follow the Firework Code and firework safety advice from the Royal Society for the Protection of Accidents (RoSPA) to ensure the safe use of fireworks.
Dr Dave Kirby, Deputy Medical Director at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said: “There will be many firework-related events taking place across the region in the coming days, and we want everyone to enjoy the celebrations. First and foremost, we would always recommend going to a professionally organised, public firework display.
“However, if you are planning to host your own firework display, please ensure you follow all the necessary safety precautions to avoid accidents. If fireworks are used incorrectly, they can cause serious and sometimes life-changing injuries.”
In the event of an accident with fireworks or a bonfire, it is important to act quickly and follow the NHS advice for treating burns and scalds: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/burns-and-scalds/
For minor injuries, visit NHS 111 online at 111.nhs.uk or go to a minor injuries unit. For serious injuries, seek urgent medical help by calling 999.
