Emergency Ambulance Service (999)

Our main focus is to respond to 999 calls, arrange the most appropriate response to meet patients’ needs and get help to patients who have serious or life-threatening injuries or illnesses as quickly as possible.
In 2023-24, staff in our Emergency Operations Centres (EOC) in York and Wakefield received 1,176,634 emergency and routine calls, an average of 3,223 calls a day.
To meet this demand, we have staff working on the frontline responding to emergencies. This includes paramedics and ambulance support workers as well as specialist paramedics in critical and urgent care as well as mental health.
In 2023-24 we responded to a total of 837,043 emergency incidents with 140,824 of these callers receiving help with their healthcare needs over the phone as it was not necessary for them to be taken to hospital by ambulance.
