Yorkshire Ambulance Service issues firework safety advice ahead of Diwali and Bonfire Night
31 October 2024
The region’s ambulance service is reminding everyone to take extra care and follow firework safety advice during the upcoming Diwali and Bonfire Night celebrations.
Every year, Yorkshire Ambulance Service is called to patients who have been injured by fireworks or bonfire-related incidents. These injuries can range from minor burns to life-threatening conditions. The service is urging the public to follow the Firework Code, to ensure the safe use of fireworks at home.
Dr Steven Dykes, Deputy Medical Director at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said: “There will be many firework-related events taking place across the region in the coming days, and we want everyone to enjoy the celebrations. We would always recommend going to a professionally organised, public firework display.
“However, if you are planning to host your own event, please ensure you follow the necessary safety precautions. If fireworks are used properly, accidents are avoidable but if they are used incorrectly, they can result in serious injuries.”
In the event of an accident with fireworks or a bonfire, it is important to act quickly and follow the NHS advice for treating burns and scalds: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/burns-and-scalds/
For minor injuries, visit NHS 111 online at 111.nhs.uk or go to a minor injuries unit. For serious injuries, seek urgent medical help by calling 999.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has also issued advice to ensure events involving fireworks are safe and enjoyable for all: https://www.rospa.com/policy/home-safety/advice/fireworks-safety
